Does the dojo have a curriculum?

Bay City Boxing Classes

If you are searching for Bay City Boxing classes, or MMA classes, you should check out the program offered here at Cosens MMA.  In our mixed martial arts program we go over boxing for mixed martial arts.  This form of boxing is much more useful if you are ever in a real-life situation in which you need to defend yourself.  We will teach you the proper footwork to find holes in your opponent’s game.  We will teach you have to throw a proper punch. We will teach you how to avoid strikes.  Boxing, in its traditional form, is a completely different version from how it is used in MMA.  We want our members to be able to use what we teach them if they should ever need to defend themselves in a real-life situation.

We have a team of mixed martial artists and we travel to competitions together.  If you’re looking to compete in boxing or MMA, we will book your fights for you when we feel that you’re ready to compete.  You will learn a lot from your fellow classmates.  There is only one way to get better at boxing or mma, and that’s to train and spar.  We will work you up slowly and build you into the best fighter you can be.

Many people participate in our Bay City Boxing Classes that do not wish to compete.  It’s great for losing weight or just wanting to learn moves to defend yourself.  You do not have to compete to train with us!  It’s truly a gratifying feeling being part of a team whether you want to compete or not.  You will better yourself and meet a variety of people!

Cosens Successfully Defends IFL Middleweight Title

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, Charlie Cosens successfully defended his middleweight title for the Impact Fight League at the Place of Auburn Hills.  Cosens

was going up against a 7-2 fighter named Cody Wall fighting out of the American Muscle Gym in Grand Rapids, MI. There was a crowd of 2,000 to 3,000 people at the Palace.  As the fighters walked to the cage they walked down a 300ft catwalk with flames shooting up 10 to 15ft in the air.  The atmosphere was electric with the music booming and the fans cheering.

As the bout began, Wall immediately shot for a single leg takedown that was stuffed immediately by Cosens. It was evident that Wall did not want this to be astandup fight.  Cosens dominated the fight choosing his shots from side control, throwing heavy knees from the clinch,  and working off the cage.  Midway through the 3rd round Cosens was able to land some heavy shots from side control that ultimately ended the fight.

The main difference between an average fighter and a true mixed martial artist is the time, dedication, and sacrifice that is put into training.  Cosens is a veteran of mixed martial arts that truly understands what it takes to get it done in the cage.  He attributes a huge amount of his success to the incredible amount of support he gets from his students at Cosens MMA.

Starkey Continues Success in the Cage: 5-0

Crystal Starkey competed in the Halloween Beatdown 2 event on October 28, 2011 at Saginaw Valley State University. Crystal’s opponent was Chandra Engel who trains with American Muscle in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Engel was nationally ranked at number 6 going into the fight according to NONSTOP WMMA. Read the article titled Crystal Starkey Defeats Chandra Engel by NONSTOP WMMA.

In the first round Engel pinned Starkey up against the cage.  It was clear that Engel’s game plan was to wear down Starkey with her wrestling and dirty boxing skills.  The duration of the first round was spent with Starkey pinned up against the cage and Engel kneeing and punching Starkey’s legs.

In the second round Starkey looked much more determined.  She seemed a little angry that Engel had controlled the entire first round. Starkey came out swinging and took Engel to the ground.  At around 1:30 into the first round Starkey submitted Engel by rear naked choke retaining her Blackout Women’s 125lb belt.

With this win, NONSTOP WMMA has moved Starkey up to number 3 in the nation at 125lbs.  This is an incredible accomplishment!

Congrats, Crystal.

Wesley Dinan, Charlie Cosens, Ed Kirby and Mike MartinezThe event had former UFC fighters in attendance signing autographs and taking pictures.  Mike Martinez won his fight via tap out.  His jiu jitsu looked amazing as he swept his opponent and ended up in full mount. Wesley Dinan won his first title fight and brought home the Big Red Entertainment Heavyweight Belt! He won the fight with a perfect knee to the face of his opponent. The fight ended at 2:59 of round 1. Ed Kirby had no trouble with his opponent taking care of him in the first round via tap out due to knees to the body.  There’s a difference between cage fighters and mixed martial artists.  We are proud to say that each and every one of our fighters are mixed martial artists.  They train hard and prepare their bodies for competition every single time.  Congratulations guys!
